When the opportunity came up to attend Tracy Verdugo’s Paint Mojo class in Oaxaca (pronounced wha-ha-ca), Mexico, I jumped on it! I’ve been a fan of Tracy for years and have wanted to go to Oaxaca ever since I heard intriguing stories back in the 70’s. April seemed the perfect time to make the trip. What better way to celebrate spring and my birthday? I can honestly say it was a magical experience that exceeded my expectations. Tracy is an angel who freely shares her process. Sweet friendships were made with attendees from Belgium, Texas, Australia, Georgia, Brazil, California and Las Vegas. The retreat was held at Art House, run by the talented Lisa Sonora. Everyday my vegan needs were met with breakfasts and lunches featuring fresh fruits, salads, beans, rice, delicious juices and fantastic guacamole. During our art sessions, we gathered in a circle to process our intentions, dreams, and support each other. We layered with acrylic inks, oil pastels, paint, collage and any other medium we chose. The results were vibrant and lively. We also had time for many outings to explore and shop. The villages outside of the city were delightful. We met local artisans who did wood carvings, painting, ceramics, weaving and embroidery. The city itself is filled with galleries, churches, courtyards, botanical gardens, murals, mescal tasting, and unique restaurants. The food in Oaxaca is exceptional, featuring fresh, indigenous ingredients. Every day is a celebration in Oaxaca. Parades, dances, live music and fireworks abound. I loved every minute of this experience and look forward to returning and taking another class from Tracy Verdugo somewhere around the world..
